The fate of the squid boat Kin Nan and its crew of 18, berthed at New Plymouth, is still unknown as no word lias been heal’d from the vessel’s Taiwanese owner. Tonight the company had still not replied to a cable sent at the week-end by the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Maclntyre) which outlined the conditions to be met before the boat would be returned. The Crown took control of jthe Kin Nan last Thursday (after the conv.ction of the vessel’s master for fishing in (New Zealand waters and (failing to comply with the requirements of a fisheries officer. The senior inspector of fisheries at Palmerston North (Mr S. J. McGeorge) said in New Plymouth that his Ministry ■wanted to move the boat as soon as possible, but just when depended on an answer from Taiwan. “Legally the crew should not be on the boat, but on humanitarian grounds we (are allowing them to stay (aboard and we are looking I after them and giving them (food,” he said. i Mr R. J. Somerville, the solicitor who acted for the Kin Nan’s master during the court case, said the appeal would be lodged some time this week.
