Shopping crowds large
Christchurch shop assistants struggled to cope with an unexpected large number of customers yesterday, as people packed city stores after the Easter break. Thousands of schoolchildren and adults who had not returned to work, crowded into the city to shop. The scene in one department store was described as being “as busy as Christmas.” Most managers said that there had been a heavy demand for school wear, as parents suddenly realised that winter was on its way. All agreed that business had been considerably- more than normal for that time of the week. The cold and grey day also encouraged people to go to the cinema, and many theatres reported matinee 'attendances well up on the average. A Walt Disney film at I one theatre attracted very nearly . a full house, and others did up to 50 per cent more business than usual.
