Italy’s crisis

(N.Z.P.A .Reuter—Copyright) ROME. April 20. Italy’s political crisis may well enter a decisive stage today, when the Christian Democrats begin two days of talks with other parties in a bid to stave off a General Election. The Socialists, whose support; is essential for the sur-

vival of the minority Christian Democrat Government, have rejected in advance the proposal by the secretary of the Democrat Party (Mr Benigno Zaccagini, for limited consultation on emergency economic measures. The Communists have said that they will listen to such an offer, but are sceptical about it being acceptable. A spate of arson attacks, apparently politically motivated, has hit several Italian factories in the last 10 days, and some politicians fear that the Government may resign and dissolve Parliament, paving the way for an election. If an election is called, the Communists may well be elected as Italy’s largest party, and end 3® years of Christian Democrat rule.
