Comparison of salaries 'misleading'

The head of the Christchurch Police district (Chief Superintendent G. E. Twentyman) said yesterday that, too often comparisons made between policemen’s salaries and others were misleading. Mr Twentyman was referring to an article in “The Press” yesterday related to the salaries paid to probation officers. The basic salary of a first year constable was, at $5829, about the same as that paid to those entering the probation service. The new rate for first year constables of $7414 was only arrived at after allowances were made for overtime, penal time and night rates. “Too often police salaries are viewed without making allowances for the difficulty of their duties and the times they must work,” Mr Twentyman said.

Infectious diseases: Two cases of infectious hepatitis were reported in the Christchurch Health district last week.
