Guards on sulkies
Mudguards could become part of the race day equipment in wet weather on allweather tracks. Mr John Noble, the presi-j: dent of the New Zealand Horsemen’s Association, has had developed a type of mudguard which he thinks will be more satisfactory in New Zealand conditions than the American-made guard which has been used in experiments. The new type of guard was tried on several sulkies at trials held last Wednesday and it seemed much more robust and a firmer fixture than the one made in the United States. Further slight modifications will probably be necessary before the prototype can be submitted to the Trotting Conference for approval. Last April, during the World Drivers’ Championship. the guards were used for the first time at the Melbourne Showgrounds. New Zealand's Peter Wolfenden was high in his praise for them and felt that they should be introduced in this country. It is anticipated that the guards will be owned by trotting clubs and be made available when conditions demand. They should be available from the start of next season, subject to their acceptance by the Trotting Conference.
