N.Z. archery records fall
(From Out Own Reporter) ASHBURTON. Two New Zealand records were established, both by juniors, during the three days* of the South Island archery tournament which ended in Ashburton yesterday. Stephen Haines, of Christchurch, broke the national record for the short burton with a total of 769 for the 90 arrows, fired at the 50, 40, and 30 yard ranges. The previous record, 759, was held by Ross McLaren, of Dunedin. McLaren, also a competitor
at the tournament, was not to be o-utdone, however, as he set a new New Zealand junior record yesterday in the clout, one of the final events on the programme. His score was 292, and he finished 22 points ahead of the runnerup, Haines. McLaren's new record bettered the old record of W. Gordon by four points. The tournament was an outstanding success for Mrs L. Arnott, of Dunedin, who is the national field shooting champion and a former target, champion. She won the Sherwood Cup for the best aggregate total for all competitors, men, women, and juniors, in the tournament, and the Argyle Cup for the best aggregate for women archers. Mrs Arnott easily won the South Island title in the
women’s field shoot by a margin of 81 points from her closest rival throughout the tourney, Mrs J. Cattermole, of Christchurch. Stephen Haines won the Walter Strange Challenge Cup for the handicap short Ohio shooting. The Dunedin team won the Timaru Trophy for the teams’ event. Rugby.— The highly-rated Auckland University XV was held to a 10-10 draw by Massey in the final of the North Island universities rugby tournament at Athletic Park, Wellington. Motor-racing.— lan Hodge, of Feilding. has been confirmed as the provisional new national Formula Vee motor champion after the hearing of protests at the end of Sunday’s motorracing at Bay Park.
