Diamond Harbour service

Sir, — In reply to R. J. Estall’s letter, printed on April 12, while the 2.50 p.m. launch trip is shown in the timetable, it has been explained to Diamond Harbour residents, including Mr Install, on various occasions, that this trip is primarily a tourist charter cruise. The launchmaster does not know until 2.15 p.m. each day how many tourists will be travelling on the cruise. If the launch is not fully loaded, a call to Diamond Harbour is included as an extra service. When it is fully booked a notice is clearly displayed stating that there will be no call at Diamond Harbour. If the call to Diamond Harbour were to stop completely, this additional service to residents which can frequently be offered, would cease. The income from tourist cruises helps to offset in a substantial way the loss incurred on timetable commuter trips. — Yours, etc., R. J. EWEN. Town Clerk, Lyttelton. April 15, 1976.
