Ships idle at Lyttelton

Three ships tied up almost all available labour at Lyttelton last week, leaving two other vessels idle for most of the week. Both the Iron Arnhem, from Australia, and the Polish vessel Kochanowski arrived on Tuesday morning, but the Kochanowski was still idle on Friday. The Iron Arnhem was idle for two days but managed to secure one gang on Thursday. A spokesman for the port employers association said 442 men had been available for work the previous Friday. However, they were all absorbed by three ships with heavy labour requirements, the Illyric. Fremantle Star and Icenic, which arrived last week-end.

By Tuesday the port was ; 168 men short, 162 short on Wednesday and 140 short on Thursday. The Illyric absorbed 126 men, the Icenic 111 and the Fremantle Star 78. A further 54 were placed on supplementary hours. Another 121 men were not available — either away on holiday, on “compo” or taking the day off. Port employers said it was not possible to spread the labour distribution more evenly. Once a ship had secured a labour force this was not normally reduced. The right of watersiders to finish working a ship once they had begun was also recognised.
