World mark beaten

One of the most sue-1 cesslul New Zealand (Paraplegic Games—the! eighth held—ended at Burnham yesterday after a total of 34 national records had been broken. Not content with the eight records broken on Friday the athletes really got carried away on Saturday, revelling in the perfect weather, and beat 26 more marks — 17 in field events and 9 in swimming. A world mark was also broken on Saturday but cannot be ratified because the [New Zealand paraplegic : body is not represented on [the Stoke Mandeville Paraplegic Sports Federation (the international parent body). [ The magnificent throw of 27.52 m in the Class 3 discus [by Graham Condon, a 19 7 2 Olympic gold medallist. : looks particularly good when [ compared with the winning throw of 26.44 m in Class 5, [itself a national record. I Condon, of Christchurch, [ beat another Class 3 nat- [ ional record with a swim of 51.8 sec in the 50m backstroke on Saturday evening, but the most successful athlete of the week-end was Betty Williamson (Southern North Island) who set four new national records. Williamson, a grade IB athlete, set new marks in the discus, the javelin, shot- ■ put, and the exercise club throw. I Paul Chambers was the i most successful swimmer, I beating the national records [ in three—som breaststroke. 3 x 25m medley, 50m [freestyle, of the four Class 4 ■events he entered. ; One of the most spectacular record breaking efforts I was achieved by the Central [ North Island swimmer. Joy I Douglas, who shattered the old mark of 48.4 sec for the 25m backstroke, Class 2 by an incredible 18sec. Another fine effort was put up by Doug Moore (Central North Island) with a record-breaking throw of 7.03 m in the Class 2 shotput. The winner of the Class 3 section in this event. Jim Savage (Central North Island) also broke a record with a throw of 8.20 m. It was an encouraging perIformance from Savage who [ will captain the Olympic i team which goes to Canada ' later this year. Central North Island took I the inter-association trophy I for aggregate points in all

events and Glenys Watson (Auckland), disabled women, won the special award for meritorious effort. Abbreviations used in the following results are: Auckland (A. i.
