Roller marks fall to Begg

CSpeciol Correspondent) TIMARU. rhe New Zealand banked track oiler skating championships finished with a spate of new national road records when the competitors went to the Levels motor raceway and set five new times, three in the men's events and two in the women's

Bill Begg of Christchurch, who had earlier become the first person to take four titles in a series of banked track championships, set records for the men’s 1000, 1500 and 20,000 metres, while Mrs Karen Yorke, also of Christchurch, broke the old times for the women's 500 and 1000 metre distances.

Begg and P. Chesmar stayed level throughout the 20.000 metre effort and in the sprint for the line, Chesmar failed by 12 centimetres to catch Begg. They smashed the record ty 6min 35.45ec to bring the time down to 38min 31.8 sec, which makes it the fastest 20,000 ever covered in this country on a banked or flat track.

Begg and Chesmar also fought out the finish of the 20km event in the N.Z. championships, with Brent R'oberton (Christchurch) finishing a lap down third and Calvin Gabites (Timaru) fourth at two laps. The pace was on right from the start in the 120 lap race and after 25 laps Begg and Chesmar broke away from the other six skaters; but it took them another 50 laps to catch the others and take a lap lead. They were then content to retain their lead, although the pair never let the pace drop — their time of 42 minutes was three minutes outside the record but it also made the race the second fastest ever. Mrs Yorke won all her races in the senior women’s section, where her only opposition was Paddy Duncan of Wellington, who finished second in each event.

W’ayne Millar of Timaru was closely pressed in all his events in the intermediate grade, with Peter Brown splitting the Timaru pair in all events except the last.

With Maree Maxwell (Masterton) withdrawing because of a broken arm and C. Cole of Papatoetoe never arriving, Miss Cheryl Millar (Christchurch) had no opposition in the intermediate women’s events. Miss Maxwell was the reigning titleholder and record-holder. Bruce Richardson, the Canterbury banked track junior champion, was never extended in the junior boy’s
