Lester wins dinghy heat

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. The Christchurch yachtsman, Peter Lester, stole the show in the sixth heat of the interdominion OK dinghy championship sailed off Murrays Bay yesterday.

Taking heed of the advice that the wind swings were coming from out of the east, Lester sailed out to sea, while the rest of the fleet stayed inshore, and gained the bonus of a good 30 degree lift to the windward mark. At one stage he was leading a world-class fleet by a good three minutes. As the national champion, Lester yesterday made his big effort to get back into

the contest. He started the day well with a second placing in the morning race and came to life with a stunning win in the afternoon race. Lester’s return to form checked the run of the Australian champion, Bill Bell, who, in the more boisterous conditions of Saturday after Friday’s light airs, had taken a first and second placing to climb into championship contention. Lester made a grand bid for the championship but the Auckland helmsman, R. Lamb, also has sailed a consistent series.

First and second placings yesterday have put Lamb at the top of the overall points table with the loss of 32 points. R. Fisher (Australia) (45.1) is second and Lester (45.4) third.

Peter Maynard (Canterbury) is seventh overall.
