Folk music festival

Folk music had to compete with jet engines and steam locomotive engines at McLean’s Island at the week-end. A four-day folk festival was organised by local folk clubs for the Easter weekend. However, yesterday it had to compete with a steam and traction-engine rally next door. The musicians had

te compete with loud steam whistles and the even louder take-offs and landings of aircraft at the nearby airport. Three hundred and sixty people registered for the festival, which began on Friday and will end today. They came from as far as Auckland and Invercargill, and were joined by hundreds of local people. Music workshops have

been held, including a shearing - song workshop organised by Phil Garland. Included in this was a display of blade shearing. A bam dance was held on Saturday evening and there was a concert in the James Hay Theatre last evening. It is the first time such a festival has been held in Christchurch, and it was such a success that the organisers plan to hold a similar event next year.
