‘Substantial sum’ to get boat back

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 18. The owners of the Taiwanese fishing boat seized last month for fishing inside New Zealand territorial waters might have to pay a “substantial sum” to get their vessel back.

The vessel, which is now legally owned by the New Zealand Government, has been offered back to the Taiwanese for an undisclosed sum.

The redemption fee was set by the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries (Mr Maclntyre) before he left for Japan at the week-end. Mr Maclntyre sent a telegram to the boat’s owners in Taiwan stating that if they wanted their vessel back they would have to pay for it.

The figure set by Mr MacIntyre was not as much as the boat was worth, the Assistant Director - General (administration) of the Ministry of Agriculture and

Fisheries (Mr S. J. Callahan) said today. “But it’s still a substantial sum — a very substantial sum,” he said. I Mr Callahan said one opinion of the Taiwanese vessel’s value was $150,000 and that opinion was taken into account by Mr MacIntyre. If the Taiwanese owners did not repurchase the boat it would probably be sold by tender, Mr Callahan said.

The situation was complicated by the stated decision of the master, Mr Weng Chang Ngan, to appeal against two convictions on charges related to the seizing of his vessel.

It became the property of the New Zealand Government when Mr Weng was

convicted in the New Plymouth Magistrate’s Court last week. Mr Weng was fined a total of $llOO.
