WITH THAT MAN AGAIN
Stepping Into The Spotlight. By Mollie Weir. Hutchinson. 190 pp. N.Z. price $8.30.
Molly Weir, well-known as an actress in radio, television and on the stage, is becoming equally well-known as an author since she began writing her rather lengthy and detailed autobiography. Her first three books, “Shoes Were For Sunday,” “Best Foot Forward,” and “A Toe On The Ladder” covered her childhood years in Glasgow and the start of her stage career.
“Stepping Into The Spotlight” takes up the story when, shortly after the end of the Second World War, she joined the cast of ITMA, As she
herself says “It’s That Man Again” was not just a radio show but an institution for Tommy Handley and his team helped to keep Britain cheerful during the darkest days of the war. Molly Weir’s performance with ITMA established her as a radio actress of note, and in her fourth book she writes of her work in radio, in films, and on the stage. Her writing is bright and engaging, her story holds the attention, and she tells a number of amusing and affectionate tales of famous people she met and knew. Miss Weir herself emerges from the pages as a modest, friendly and talented person. Her book, though unremarkable, can provide an hour or two of easy reading.
