7 p.c. saving of power called for

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON

The Government called for a 7 per cent voluntary saving in electricity consumption — and said that if the response was not sufficient, direct controls would be imposed.

“Because the Government does not favour compulsion to achieve this saving, it appeals to domestic and industrial users to make the necessary savings now.” said the Minister of Energy Resources (Mr Holland). February and March had been very dry. particularly in the South Island, and oil consumption for electricity generation had been exceptionally high, because of falling storage in the lakes, Mr Holland said. “The Government will watch electricity consumption closely in the next few weeks, and if a 7 per cent saving is not achieved, controls will have to be introduced,” he said.
