Buyers improve Aust. markets
Buyers re-entered the market to help share prices improve across the board on Australian stock exchanges on Thursday. The holiday-shortened week ended on a firmer note, with miners recording the best gains in a curtailed session, after the recent shake-out. Pancontinental rose 10c to 860 c and Peko-Wallsend to 554 c CRA and Bougainville gained 5c each, while Woodside Burmah, WMC, Ocean Resources, and Hamersley showed marginal improvements. Utah fell 5c to 325 c and MIM 2c to 254 c. BHP went against the trend with a 14c loss at 714 c. ANI, ASL, Grace Bros. David Jones rights, and Pioneer Sugar fell back top. The banks were among the top performers: the Wales rose 6c to 618 c, and the CBC and National put on 3c each. CSR was a little better. Myers rose c to 220 c.
