FIRMER TONE ON BRISK MARKET
Although falls still outnumbered rises, the New Zealand sharemarket took on a firmer tone on Thursday. Trading was brisk because exchanges were confined to a morning call. The five most-active issues accounted for nearly half the total turnover.

A total of 233.800 shares was traded on New Zealand stock exchanges on Thursday, 57,200 fewer than on Wednesday. Industrial issues totalled 232,900 (285,700 on Wednesday), and 900 mining and oil shares were traded (5300 on Wednesday). A total of 78 New Zealand issues was traded.
