U.S. Budget for 1977

The United States Senate has approved a record $412,600m target for Government spending in 1977, increasing considerably President Ford’s Budget pro-; jections. Senators adopted without! change proposals by thej Senate Budget Committee after resisting both Con-j servative attempts to cut! spending and Liberal moves! to spend more on social pro-! grammes. The Senate proposals for. the fiscal year, which begins! on October 1, call for the; expenditure of $412,600m, against a revenue of $362.400m meaning a $50.2G0m deficit. President Ford’s latest revised spending plan had called for outlays of! $395.200m. Under a new Budget system, both the Senate and the House of Representatives review the President’s Budget plans, and then set targets of their own for Congress to follow.
