PAY RISES IN U.K.

Unions may ask for 5 per cent (N.Z.P.A.Reuter—Copyright > LONDON, April 14. British trade unions are considering a plan to ask the Labour Government for a 5 per cent wage rise this year, instead of the 3 per cent limit they have been asked to accept, according to informed union sources in London. This could be part of the unions’ answer to the unprecedented proposals by the Chancellor of the Exchequer (Mr Denis Healey) in his Budget last week, in which he asked the unions to accept a 3 per cent limit in return for back-dated tax concessions.
