Lyttelton library

Sir, — I must object strongly to your editorial this morning attacking the right of the Lyttelton community to decide for themselves about their Council’s library proposals. You concede that it is, in fact, Lyttelton’s problem, but then decry the results of the poll, accusing all who voted “against” of thwarting the

common good, and implying that voters were misled. You would do very much better to encourage more people into community decision making, rather than accusing those (however few) who already do become involved of being obstructive. For sure, I support your call for revision of poll procedures, but with the object of maximum involvement, and not, as you hint, of muzzling legitimate local protest. — Yours, etc., PETER HEAL. April 14, 1976.
