Jolly time for all
Eighty-five senior citizens were guests of the United States Air Force yesterday when they were shown a film about the Antarctic and treated to tea and cakes at its base at Christchurch Airport. They were members of the New Brighton Jolly Club, on its Wednesday afternoon outing. At tea, club members sang “Happy Birthday” to four of their number. One was 76 yesterday, and the other three will have birthdays next week. The founder "and chairman of the club (Mr W. Lowes) said that it had 118 members — the oldest was 87 and the youngest, 56. It was organised for lonely people who did not belong to other clubs.
The group met every Wednesday for a few hours, some sort of entertainment being arranged as well as afternoon tea, Mr Lowes said.
