Top makes and top makers
Toyota Corollas were the world’s highest-production car last year, for the second successive year. The Japanese company made 648,965 Corollas in 1975, and second place in the world production table for individual models went to
the Datsun 120 Y, with total output for the year of 531,430 cars. The production figures were, however, still well below the 766,937 Corollas made in 1973 — when even that number took the model no higher than third place on the production table. The situation is a result of the falling sales and production figures in other parts of the world. The world production leaders in 1975 were Corolla, Datsun 120 Y, Volkswagen Golf (419,000), Renault Rl2 (368,000), G. M. Cutlass (363,000), Renault R 5 (339,000), Ford (United States) Granada (336,000), Honda Civic (328,000), United States Chevrolet (318,000), and the Fiat 127 (306,000). Toyota itself maintained its position as the third largest car-maker in the world last year, a position it has held since 1971. Ahead of Toyota came General Motors and Ford — both with production down somewhat on 19/4, although the production of Toyota and fourth-placed Nissan was up substantially on 1974. Renault was fifth biggest producer, followed by Chrysler, Volkswagen, Fiat, British Leyland, and Citroen.
