Locks should shine in invitation rugby
A keen struggle among the locks promises to be the main feature of the Southbridge Rugby Club's centenary invitation ma+ch at the Southbridge Domain on Easter Day. Alan Sutherland, the Marlborough and former All Black No. 8, will return to the position in which he made two test apperances against the Springboks in 1970. His locking partner in the Southbridge invitation team will be the 6ft 7in John Ross, a Mid-Canterbury nominee for the All Black trials. They will be opposed by Gary Brown (University A) and Peter Coleman (Christchurch), two developing
locks who 'have played for Canterbury B. The 23-year-old Brown was rated the star of the New Zealand Universities team on its recent overseas tour. Besides Sutherland, All .Blacks taking part in the match will be Alex Wyllie, Doug Bruce, lan Hurst, Kerry Tanner, and Fergie McCormick. Hurst’s rival at centre for the Cantabrians will be Richard Wixon, an 18-year-old Regular Force soldier from Burnham Camp. He w’as a leading player for the Canterbury under-19 team last season. Steve Scott, Bruce and Murray McEwan, all of whom have been named in the provincial squad this week, will form the inside back combination for the Invitation XV.
One of the wings in this team will be Brian Ford, a Marlborough prospect for the All Black tour of South Africa. The Cantabrians will have in this position Randall Scott (University A); his father, Sir Ronald Scott, will be the referee. The teams are:Invitation XV. — McCormick; Ford, Hurst, S. C.
