Local Moths seek title
Six Canterbury helmsmen will take part in the New Zealand Moth yachting championship at Torbay’—where the were recently held—in Auckland during Easter week-end.
Leading the contingent will be the South Island title-holder, Glen Church, and the present Canterbury champion. Keith Henderson. Their team-mates are Cliff Voyce, John Platts, John Mclntosh and Barry Toomey, the notable absentee being Barry Wright, who won the Stewart’s Gully club’s open contest last Sunday While Church and Henderson should acquit themselves
well in the six-race series, it would be a major surprise if they headed off the traditionally powerful Auckland skippers for the major honours.
Paul Page, seeking his fourth consecutive national championship, proved that he has retained his top rating in a new boat by claiming the North Island title. His predecessor as New Zealand’s leading Moth competitor, Rick Bishop, has entered again, while John Elliott will be attempting to add the Moth crown to his national 3.7 metres title. Considerable interest will be taken in two radicallydesigned Auckland boats, which features twin centreboards.
