Cowan’s crew resourceful
It seems the crew of ithe steam trawler iCowan, which sank at I Port Levy in 1948, were |a little more resourceIful than they were given (credit for in a recent article in "The Press.” : The sinking of the Cowan on a pinnacle of rock off Port Levy was mentioned in an article dealing with the fishing boat Cameron R, formerly the Te Rawene. | The crew, it was reported. ;had been rescued from a (rocky’ perch by’ a local (farmer in a dinghy. I A reader said that this (was not the case. The Cowan struck at 9.30 p.m. on March 19, 1948, and sank within seven minutes. The crew managed to launch the Cowan’s boat, but in the meantime one crew member had succeeded in jumping to an adjacent rock. Only three men managed to get into the boat before the Cowan went down, leaving four in the water. The skipper, Mr George Mauncer, was dragged down with the Cowan but was able to struggle free. The four men in the water were eventually got on board the lifeboat, which then proceeded to Starvation Bay’ where she was beached. Three of the crew then went on in the lifeboat, to
iLittle Port Cooper, where the I Lyttelton Harbour Board’s ! signal station was then (located. They arrived about midnight and roused the signal man, who was able to summon help from Lyttelton. The Cowan was owned by P. Feron and Company, of Christchurch, and had originally been built at Sydney in 1914. She'was a wooden screw steamer of 67 tons gross, powered by a 24 h.p. engine, and was 83ft 6in in length. ARRIVALS Nil. DEPARTURES Nil. EXPECTED ARRIVALS H.M.N.Z.S. Inverell, from sea, today.
