40 dead, 65 hurt in blast

(N.Z.P A.-Reuter—Copyright) LAPUA (Finland), April 14. A Government inquiry began today into the explosion at a munitions factory here that took more than 40 lives. Hospitals nursed 25 gravely injured people and said about 40 others had been less seriously hurt in the explosion yesterday. It flattened the cartridge department of the factory. This small town where flags were at half-mast, tried today to measure the cost of the tragedy. Officials say they are afraid as many as 50 of Lapua’s children have lost fathers or mothers. Of 29 dead identified so far, 26 were women. Eyewitnesses said the explosion had resembled their idea of an atom bomb. It shattered windows and flung cartridges through an area a kilometre radius round the factory.
