ADDINGTON MARKET Store lambs improve; calves easier
Store lamb values ■ show a distinct lift at ’ the Addington Market j yesterday, in spite of a; slight easing in the export schedule earlier in the week. I This week’s store sheep yarding was small. Il numbered only 2505, and comprised 1500 wether lambs, 420 ewe lambs and 585 ewes. In the store calf section, large steer calves again drew the best inquiry, but medium calves and most heifer calves lost the small improvement shown at Tuesday’s sale. . Store lambs In spite of the easing in ex-1 port prices, the store wether lamb market was at all stages brisk The yarding consisted mainly of halfbreds and shorn Romneys, and although many of the woolly lambs were in hard condition/ they sold at rates about 40c better than last week Most of Hie entry ranged from 58.50 to $9.50. with the top price of the da? being $lO 60 for a pen of Drysdale-cross lambs, shorn early in the summer. Small lambs ranged from S 5 to. Ewe lambs also rose by 40c to 50c a head, although there was little premium over wether lamb rates. A small pen of Corriedales fetched the top price of $11.20. shorn Romneys sold to Sil. and the remainder at $B.BO to $9.50. Quality was fair average. Sales of store lambs incl uded: — Wethers: F. The yarding of fewer than 600 head was a miscellaneous 'collection of one-? ear ewes which sold mainly at $5.50 to $6.60. ! The best of two pens of twoI tooths sold to 59.80. They were halfbreds, with about six months I growth of wool, and mated to halfbred rams. Another pen of similar ewes fetched $8.90. The sole quotation of breeding ewes was:— I S.M.R. Eder (Rangiorai, 32 jCorriedales, mated, at $6.40. Store calves Store calves had a satisfactory sale for the season, although the market was not quite as strong as on Tuesday. Yesterday’s yarding, confined to districts south of the VVaipara , River, drew a yarding of 2465 head Most of them were drawn .'from the Okuku and Banks Peninsula districts. As at Tuesday’s sale, the yardling again included some good i lines of well-grown calves, but 'the medium section of the yarding was not quite as good as those offered the previous day. Generally, the large calves were ver? close to the levels of the previous day, but medium steer calves, and most heifer calves lost the improvement of $2 to S 3 shown on Tuesday. Buying inquiry came mainly | from* North Canterbury. A few jsales were made to Banks Peni insula. Mid-Canterbury and the {West Coast. One of the features of the ’market was the price of $99 paid
lor the top pen of SimmentalHereford cross steer calves from a Christchurch district vendor.
