‘Quality the key’ in music
The very high quality of the programmes presented and the high quality of performance, were the only things that would attract and keep an audience, said Mr R. Field-Dodgson, conductor of the Royal Christchurch Musical Society, on Tuesday night at the society’s annual meeting. “We can look back at a year of very rewarding music, and forward to a year which promises to be equally rewarding and challenging,” said Mr FieldDodgson. Integrity was needed in everything done in connection with music. “At the present time there is too much that is gimmicky and shoddy in music circles.” Many of the arts were in a perilous state because of reduced grants and the effects of inflation. The society, however, was in good heart, largely because of the good will of its members, said Mr Field-Dodgson. Mr J. Collins was elected president, Mr J. R. Allison, treasurer, and Miss O. B. Brosnan, secretary.
