GREYHOUND RACING Many newcomers carded at tonight’s meeting

( By

BOB SCHUMACHER)

A large number of| greyhounds having their! first start will compensate for the lack of an I open-class race at the Christchurch Greyhound Racing Club’s equalisator meeting at Queen Elizabeth II Park this evening. Every so often, a newcomer steals the thunder at meetings, and with so many

puppies and maidens making their debuts, the prospects of other promising longtails emerging are bright. The Garden City Stakes for limit-open ciass dogs, over 540 m, is the main race, but the field is only an average one and the brilliance of Desert Fox at the start enable him to lead throughout.

The Red Baron dog eclipsed a similar filed at his last start and won in the impressive time of 33.25ec. Although badly drawn in box six, the long strider will be the favourite. Junior Hobbs is another! to fare poorly in the draw.: He will start from outside Desert Fox, but he is not a noted good starter and could get a favourable rails run at the first bend if he misses the jump. The Old Hobbs dog has a powerful finish and will be a main threat if he is handily placed at the home straight entrance.

Farloc, another which gets back in the early running, always runs on strongly and is a good place prospect. Tiger Moss, which has not had the best of luck in recent starts, looks the pick of the others, although Rua Moss could surprise, even from the outside. Novice dogs have two' races, the first over the sprint distance of 340 m, the second over 540 m. Man Friday, which has raced with dash recently, has an excellent chance of winning the Valley Inn Stakes sprint form the ace box. Topsy, an effortless last-start winner, might be the main danger, although the short distance will suit Timmy Havoc ai.d Domingo. The Philip Morris Stakes has an interesting line-up. Cheeky Chief, which won the Robinson Plate at the last meeting, has compiled three wins and two thirds in his last five appearances. He will have to contend with the tearaway White Heron, which did well to finish third behind Desert Fox and Miss Print at her last start. Smokey Eyes, an unreliable bitch at the start but one which can produce a devastating sprint, Martin's Pride, which was just caught on the line last time out, and Stargazer, an impressive winner of a consolation race at the Robinson Rose Bowl meeting, add to the form puzzle.
