ADDINGTON MARKET Large store calves meet improving demand
Large store calves > showed a small improve- ! ment in value when the first of this yeek’s store calf sales was held al the Addington Market yesterday. The sale, which was confined to calves from districts north of the Waipara River, drew a yarding of [2185 head. Quality was the best seen at Addington this [season: there was a large sei lection of well-grown calves (in forward, order, along with ‘a good offering of medium calves, and a notable absence of small, tail-end lots. The Cheviot and Hawarden districts provided most of the entry, which included an excellent entry of Herefords.
Selling was followed by the largest gallery of the season, most of the buyers being from the North Canterbury area Generally, large steer calves edged up $2 to $3 a head; medium calves were mainly firm, although one line of Herefords from the back country sold at a useful margin over others. Good average heifer calves also had a better sale at values $2 to $3 stronger. Compared with recent sales, there were more sales at $3O or better.
Best Angus-cross steer calves sold at $6O to $6B. with one sale at $75: good average ranged from $54 to $5B, medium $45 to $5O, and small at $35 to $42. Best Angus and Hereford steer calves sold to $66, good average $5O to $56, medium $39 to $45, and .small at $32 to $3B. Best, heifers sold at $35 to $4O, medium at $2B to $33, and smaller at $l9 to $25.
