Bombs claimed sister ship
There was tragedy in I the loss of one of three distinctively designed sister ships belonging to the Polish Ocean Lines’ fleet. ' In 1973 the Jozef Conrad I was bombed and sunk by
the United States Air Force ■in Haiphong harbour, with i the loss of five crew mem- • bers. • One of the two remaining’ sisters, the Kochanowski,’ •turned up at Lyttelton* 'yesterday on her first visit. j With her squat, stream-! | lined funnel and super-; i structure, the Kochanowski | was strongly reminiscent off i another recent visitor, the I Gilbert Island training vessel] 'Teraaka. I Perhaps this is not sur-i i prising since the Teraaka land the Kochanowski, Jozef [Conrad, and the third of the; 1 sisters. the Wyspianski, I 'were all built in Yugoslavia I jin the early 19605.
