Scallop stocks remain high

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. I An estimated 31m scallops; 'were caught in the 1975-761 season according to the' March issue of the Ministry] of Agriculture and Fisheries] magazine, “Catch.” This represents about] ] 600,000 kg of meat. | I Despite the large number' of scallops landed and the] ;large number of boats dredging—well over 150—the 'magazine said analysis shows scallop stocks had remained high over most of the Nelson Bays - Marlborough Sounds area. Indications were - that ■catches next season, starting lon July 15, should be good. It said the high catch rates | were the result of successful ispawning, spat (young scaljlops) settlement, rapid growth and low natural deaths over the last six or seven years. The magazine added that it appeared dredging had assisted by spreading smaller scallops over a wider area and reducing competition for food.
