Tech. institutes press for flats
The Christchurch Technical Institute Council will not accept the Government’s refusal of high priority for flats at technical institutes.
On Monday night the council decided to approach the Technical Institutes’ Association again and through it the Minister of Education (Mi Gandar) and the Minister of Labour (Mr Gordon) to press for such flats.
Last year a report to the annual conference of the Technical Institutes’ Association urged that the Government give such flats high priority.
The Government has told the association that there is “clearly no prospect at present of Government finance for student residential accommodation.’’
The Christchurch Technical Institute’s council accepts that this may be so, but also wants the Government to undertake other matters related to last year’s report on student residential needs. It will ask the Government to decide whether the Minister of Labour or the Minister of Education should be responsible for providing the accommodation, and whether a preliminary plan of the costs and type of accommodation could begin.
