‘No’ to industrial request
Christchurch city councillors said this week that an industrial zone proposal for the vicinity of Humphreys Drive and Ferry Road was premature. They rejected the application of Griffin Kain and Rolleston Developments, Ltd, to subdivide about 6.5 acres for industries. The area is now zoned Residential IA (deferred urban), and councillors agreed with a town-planning committee recommendation that any future industrial zoning should follow a comprehensive plan for the area. Such a plan would include extensive landscaping and large sites, plus provision of industries which would provide a substantial number of jobs in eastern Christchurch, especially for women. They said that subdivision now would commit the area to piecemeal development.
