Security Council debate on Timor

NEW YORK. April 13. Spokesmen for Ihe Left-wing Fretilin movement and the pro-lndo-nesia political parlies in East Timor have exchanged allegations of mass killings there in addresses to the United Nations Security Council.

The council heard statements bv Mr Jose RamoHorta. of the Fretilin. Mr Guilhereme Mario Goncalves, representing the oro-Indone-sia Provisional Government in East Timor, and the Portuguese Ambassador (Mr Jo«e [Teles), before adjourning unitil tomorrow.

Mr Horta alleged [that 10 per cent of Timor' ineople had been killed in the [last six months — “more than the total number of [lives lost during the Japanjese occupation of the terri[tory during the Second [World War.” ; “The Timorese are being [subjected to repression and [massacre bv an invading I army from Indonesia, the [troops of which used nanalm jin their assault.” he said. ( The Portuguese Ambassador said he deplored the fact that nothing had been done [to end foreign military occuipation of the territorv. or to [prepare it for the real exercise of self-determination. “The Provisional Government has not the slightest claim to legitimacy,” Mr Teles said, and he urged the Council to “take measures to end the Indonesian invasion, because the peoples’ •will cannot be determined under armed occupation.” Mr Goncalves accused Mr Horta of spreading lies.
