Leftist gains in West Bank polls

Palestinian nationalists and other Arab Left-wingers have gained many seats on local councils on the occupied West Bank of the Jordan as a result of the elections yesterday. Results issued early today show victories in several towns for candidates sympathetic to the Palestine Liberation Organisation and the communist party. The change was in the) southern city of Hebron,' where Palestinian national-; ists and Left-wingers took' control of the council, which 1 had been dominated for more than 30 years by! ari, who did not stand for re-election. Candidates sympathetic to the P.L.O. also swept to victory in Ramallah and Tulkarem. where the outgoing Mayors Mr Karim Khalas and Mi Hilmi Hanoun, were both returned with many of their followers. The popular Christian Mayor of Bethlehem (Mr Elias Freij) was returned to his council, but Left-wingers and pro-P.L.O. candidates were elected there for the first time. In the largest city, Nablus, most votes went to Mr BasI san Al Shaqa, a member of a prominent local family. In Jerico, the pro-Jorda-! nian Mayor, Mr Ahmed' Gamal Saadi, was beaten I into third place by Paiestin-i ; ian nationalists. - The councils will elect! their Mayors during the next I week.
