Battle Joy and Pimento, the only two daughters of Battle Waggon in the race, filled the first two places in the Inglewood Stakes, the North Canterbury Racing Club’s feature race -for three-yeftr-old fillies at. Rangiora yesterday. Battle Joy, a busy campaigner for her • Nelson owner Mr R. H. Wordsworth in the previous fortnight, came up better than ever yesterday and won by tvyo lengths from Pimento, whose late burst carried her past Curds N Whey close to the post. Battle.?- Joy had won ®t Nelson tout starts earlier in the hands Of Gary Phillips, whd yesterday rode the favourite, Ellery Jane, a Well-beaten seventh.
This time Battle *Joy triumphed in the. hands ef Leo Molloy, who ' fed the chase after the tearaway Curds N Whey. ~v Curds N Whey tore away to a lead of five lengths at half way, but Battle Joy took closer order coming to the straight, and was clear soon after straightening. Pimento improved on disappointing performances at Nelson for her second, and Curds N Whey was in no serious trouble to save third.
Gary Phillips said later than Ellery Jane was never balanced on a track that was shifting slightly near the inside.
