A “Save Sydenham School” petition bearing 1130 signatures was received last evening by the Christchurch City Council. It was submitted earlier yesterday to Mr E. Ayers (middle), chairman of the Canterbury Education Board, by Mr H. A. Clark, chairman of the Sydenham community committee, and the member of Parliament for Sydenham (Mr J. Kirk). Mr Clark said the school “provides the last focus for community pride” in the old suburb. More than 1000 of the signatures were obtained in only two days. The petition was referred to the council’s town-planning and social services committees.
