Govt reminded of signing pact

The Government’s policy contravenes the International Convention for the Elimination of Racism which a National Government signed four years ago, according to the chairman of the Christchurch Committee on Southern Africa (Mrs M. L. Logeman). The Government should not ignore criticisms of its sporting contact with South Africa made by the Committee for the Elimination of Racism, she said. “The convention was signed by a National Government amid much publicity in 1972,” Mrs Logeman went on. “In signing, it agreed that implementation of the convention would be handed over to an 18-man

committee chosen for its impartiality and integrity. “When a member of this committee observes that New Zealand's position is equivocal, and another points out the apparent contradiction between New Zealand's policy of freedom for its sportsmen and its stated opposition to apartheid, surely the Government must reconsider its policy.” Mrs Logeman said this policy ran counter to the current of world belief. The world was watching to see whether 'New Zealand’s passion for sport was stronger than its passion for racial justice.
