Australia scrapes to shooting win

More consistent shooting by Australia gave it a narrow 112-111 victory in the annual match for the Glenn Cup with New Zealand in the national trapshooting championships at Yaldhurst yesterday.

At the half-way stage —after 10 shots each—the Australians were three points in front (57-54) but the national team knuckled down to the task in the later stages, forcing all six Australians to be on target with their last shot for the match.

The fifth man, Terry Rumbel, tied the scores by completing the only possible (20) for the visitors and they took the match when Jack Henwood found the bird with his final shot. It was a close call for Australia after frustrating ties in the contest the two I previous years. “We were very lucky,” admitted one team-member, Mike Malouf. Three of the New Zealanders — Frank Fyers, Roger Wasley, and Trevor Everett jun. — had possibles but their fourth man, Graham Neville, was not up to his usual form and missed the target with his first, sixth, tenth, fourteenth, and seventeenth shots for a disappointing 15. Forgot match Neville obviously was not quite with it yesterday as he went to work as usual, forgetting about the 3 p.m. match, and had to rush out to Yaldhurst at the last minute after being telephoned at

2 p.m. by anxious teammates.

Australia now has six wins in the contest (played since 1960), only one less than New Zealand. There have been four ties.

Today the New Zealand team will have its shoot in the Mackintosh International teams match trophy. Each member will shoot at 100 targets and the scores will then be sealed and posted to the Clay Pigeon Association in London.
