H.S.O.B. into cricket final

Dunedin, the winner of the Schick national knock-out cricket tournament in Otago, never recovered from early setbacks and was easily beaten by High School Old Boys in the South Island final at Hagley Park yesterday.

Although bathed in bright sunshine, it appeared as if the Dunedin openers were batting in darkness as ball after ball beat the bat. Dayle Hadlee, in particular, made batting a nightmare, but at the other end Geoff Allen was most economical, his first spell of five overs costing only five runs. But it was the spin of John Calder and Chris Marks which struck the first blows for High School Old Boys. Marks maintained an excellent control of line and length, and kept Dunedin’s most proficient batsmen, Keith Campbell and Warren Lees, struggling for survival. Lees was soon out, mistiming a hook shot and being caught leg-before, while Campbell was caught by a "ne running catch from David Bull just as he was looking settled. Russell Hendry, the former Otago Plunket Shield player, was the only Dunedin batsmen to look at all secure, but he too searched vainly for scoring opportunities.

Too much credit cannot be given to the High School Old Boys attack, which gave away very little. Marks was probably the best, although any representative side would have been pleased to have the services of any of them.

Alan Hounsell and Dayle Hadlee came back to finish proceedings, and Old Boys were left to score only 126. They had little trouble in scoring the required runs, but although they batted well, they were given every encouragement by poor bowling. Consistent short bowling to batsmen as good as Barry Hsdlee, Cran Bull and Calder made Old Boy’s task easy. Cran Bull and Calder batted intelligently and confidently as they steadily progressed towards victory, with Cran Bull especially playing a fine innings. Coming in with the score at 41 for 3, he was rather unlucky to miss out on a half-

century being bowled when the scores were level. Cornwall Park (Auckland) beat Naenae (Wellington) in the North Island final, and will meet H. 5.0.8. at Cornwall ’'ark next Sunday.
