Life-saving diploma candidates

Twenty-five girls and two boys will sit. the Royal Life Saving Society’s diploma examination next. Saturday in centres ranging from Kaitaia in the north to Gore in the south.

The diploma, the highest award issued by the society, comprises an extensive practical water test and a threehour written examination on all aspects of life-saving, including resuscitation, physiology, first aid, swimming skills and water safety in general. The national executive officer of the society (Mr John Hughes) said the council was particularly pleased with the record number of candidates —five of whom will sit in Christchurch — and said it was indicative of the increased interest shown in life-saving in New Zealand schools.

The examinations are held in March and August each year: in the last examination. only five of the 18 candidates passed.
