Savage mine still sound
(N Z. Press A ssn—Copy right) Despite an expected substantial loss by Northwest Iron Company, Ltd. the future of the Savage River iron ore mine in north-west Tasmania is still sound. Northwest holds a 50 per cent interest in the mine, and is 75 per cent owned by a United States consortium and 25 per cent owned by Ampol Petroleum, Ltd, and Kathleen Investments, Australia, Ltd, and other institutions. However, industry sources say the mines future is certain, because the other project partner, the Dahlia Mining Company, Ltd, is Japanese owned, and the Japanese want to ensure their supplies of iron ore, and the future of the Savage project.
