Grey Way wins in record time

Grey Way recorded his twenty-eighth win yesterday when he ran his rivals off their feet in the Ernie Poole Memorial Stakes at the Opunake Racing Club’s meeting at Hawera.

The win bought his stake earnings to $82,350. He has now gained 28 wins. 11 seconds, and 12 thirds in 70 starts during his career.

His time for the race—lmln 21.8 sec—created a new record for the 1400 metres at Hawera and will possibly be accepted as a New Zealand record, although the race was manually timed. The Grey William —Waybrooke gelding has won $23,525 this seasin from 10 wins, a second, two thirds and a fourth In 19 starts. Grev Way, owned by Mr P. G. South and trained by E. P. Corbov at Washdyke, ran a welljudged race. He was handy behind Royal Mallard in the early stages and fought out a great battle with the second favourite, Auditor In the straight. Audior came from behind to head off Ayub Khan and the tiring Slaney as the horses entered the straight, with Conner Belt finishing gamely In thi-d place. ... The first leg of the double, the Opunake Cup. was won by the well-fancied Nlmulous. which scored a two-length victory over Blanco Sol, with La Foudre a length away in third place. (N.Z.
