False claim for rings
A woman who tried to claim insurance twice on the same two rings, valued at *5OO, pleaded guilty to two charges in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. The charges, which both relate to the second insurance claim, are attempting to obtain *5OO by false pretence and making a false declaration to a Justice of the Peace. Mr E. S J. Crutchley, S.M., convicted the woman, aged 27, the mother of two young children. and remanded her on ball to March 24 for a probation report.
The woman s- name was suppressed in the meantime. Sergeant J. Cj Rowe said that on June 3 the defendant took out a *4OOO all-risks policy with the State Insurance Office. On
September 7 she lodged a claim for a wedding ring and an engagement ring. She was subsequently paid *420.
On October 6 she took out an Identical *4OOO policy with the Norwich Union Fire Insurance Society, Ltd. The next day she claimed S5OO for the same rings saying she had lost them at home.
Sergeant Rowe said that on November 27 the defendant also made a false declaration to a Justice of the Peace about the rings. tVhen questioned by the police, the defendant had said she had had a large number of bills to pay and had thought that a claim would be a good way of getting money.
