Share prices retreated to lower levels across a broad front on Australian stock exchanges yesterday, under relentless profit-taking pressure.
Sellers held the upper hand for most of the session, and at the close of trading most sectors of the market showed some sharp losses. The leading industrial stock, 8.H.P., was pushed back 18c to 744 c, while A.C.1., Hooker, Myer, C.S.R., Riders G.M., 1.C.1. 1.A.C., Comalco, Coles, and A.G.C. recorded falls of up to 5c each. The C.B.A. dropped 10c to 275 c, one of the largest falls among the industrials.
The Wales found' some support to put on 4c at 664 c. Tooth, and Lend Lease, also improved. .' . Options fell back across the board, with all B.H.P. contracts down, where traded.
Small rises of one or two cents were seen among A.S.L., the C.8.C., T.N.T., and Woolworths. The National Bank picked up 3c at 298 c. On the mining boards, Pancontinental fell 30c to 1300 c and North 8.H., Hamersley, Robe River, Ocean Resources, G.M.K., and Bougainville showed marginal losses. Queensland Mines and Kathleen dropped 10c each, and Woodside Burmah and A.A.R. eased 5c each. C.R.A., W.M.C., and M.I.M. were big losers. Utah was able to record a meagre 5c gain, while, Weeks, Ampol, and Central Norseman held their ground. Poseidon rose 4c to 162 c, and B.H. South 3c to 173 c.
