Ripples in pool

The Canterbury team received a brief shock at the end of the New Zealand age-group swimming and diving championships at Cambridge recently. Trophies were being presented by the president of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association (Mr I. N. Chadwick), and the Canterbury team and its large group of supporters, which had been keeping a close count of which centres had won gold medals, were sure Canterbury had the highest tally.

The premier trophy, the War Memorial Shield, is awarded to the centre gaining the most titles, and when Auckland was named the winner, Canterbury supporters were aghast. Auckland was presented with the Shield by Mr Chadwick, but he had to immediately represent it to Canterbury. He had mistakenly read a progressive tally of golds which had Auckland in front. Canterbury finished with 28 golds, three j ahead of Auckland.
