Rubbish tip to stay
A move to have the Bexley rubbish tip closed by the end of next year was defeated at a meeting of the Christchurch City Council on Monday. The move came during the tabling of a policy and finance committee report on the proposed co-ordinated refuse disposal scheme for Christchurch.
Cr V. S. Buck said that the proposals were of a long-term nature and that, in view of this, the council should undertake to find an alternative tip site so that the Bexley dump could be closed. Cr N. G. Hattaway said that such an undertaking would not achieve much. The finding of an alternative site and the closing of the Bexley tip would simply be imposing the same problem on another area of Christchurch.
