j GVZ. Ptcss Association) PALMERSTON NORTH March 16. A blast of gelignite rocked Pahiatua soon after j dark last night. Windows were broken, i and lumps of inacrocarpa * weighing up to 101 b were i found in the main street, 90 metres from the blast. By 10 a.m. today the Pahiatua police had received eight “very legitimate” complaints. Claims j for damages are expected. The blast was at the Pahiatua School, where a dozen parents had worked most of the week-end, clearing a newly-acquired section. I In the middle of the section was a giant macrocarpa which proved too hard for the school workers to move. They called in an explosives man from Manganiutu, and he made three blasts, culminating in the big boom about 8.30 p.m “We’ve heard he used more than a dozen plugs,” said Sergeant Ross Farquhar. Sergeant Farquhar said that as far as he was aware no permission had been gained from the local authority to blow up the big stump, which is thought to have weighed nearly 20 tons.
