Japan agrees to 12 miles

(N.Z. Press Assn —Copyright) TOKYO. The Japanese Government has decided to support conditionally a 12-miie territorial limit, a 200-mile economic zone, and innocent passage through international straits iat the forthcoming international Law of the Sea conference.

This is the first time Japan has formally announced its (intention to vote for the 12mile territorial limit and the economic zone.

The announcement said that Japan would accept the 200-mile economic zone on the understanding that due heed would be paid to the interests of nations engaged in pelagic fishing in the waters covered by the zone. These nations included Japan.

On international waterways, the Government said it would support an international waterway scheme, guaranteeing freer passage than in ordinary territorial waters.

The general manager of the New Zealand Fishing Industry Board (Mr J. S. Campbell) said in Wellington that the Japanese decision was not unexpected. “Japan has been becoming more and more realistic over the last few years.” he told N.Z.P.A.
